A VO2 test measures the amount of oxygen your body uses at different exertion levels during exercise. It is generally considered the best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. The test is typically performed on a treadmill or stationary bike. While breathing through a mask connected to the CardioCoach™, you are put through a short workout. Data is recorded and then used to calculate your personal Target Intensity Zones. These Zones will determine the specific target heart rates required for each level of intensity. Exercise training within your Zones will lead to optimal results.

CardioCoach™ gives you the most complete fitness assessment available!

  • Peak oxygen consumption
  • Calories burned at different heat rates
  • Aerobic & Anaerobic threshold
  • Target Intensity Zones

What Are Target Intensity Zones?

Different people have different training goals. Some want to run their first 5K or sprint triathlon, others a marathon or an IronMan. Others may want to lose (burn) 10 pounds of stored fat. Exercising at different levels of intensity will meet different fitness goals. Some intensities increase endurance, some burn more fat, and some focus on strengthening your heart. Target Intensity Zones pinpoint your specific target heart rates required for you to exercise at each level.

Why Test VO2 Max?

In more than a decade of providing sports injury care to countless endurance athletes (runners, cyclists, triathletes and ultra-endurance athletes), I can say that most of the injuries these athletes present with have been of the overuse type. These injuries are often a result from errors in training, specifically overtraining. Athletes constantly push themselves to improve performance. However, pushing beyond one's optimal training zone will ultimately lead to fatigue and injury, and therefore a loss in performance. When you know your zones and use them for training, cardiovascular exercise can be comfortable and safe.

You probably have seen those charts on the walls or exercise equipment at the gym showing target heart rates, however these are just averages based on formulas derived from one's age and weight. The CardioCoach™ measures your precise heart rates necessary to optimize each level of exercise and maximize your results. With Target Intensity Zones, you will train smarter, not harder!

VO2 testing can determine the exercise intensity that will optimize a person's ability to burn fat. The term "Aerobic exercise" has been commonly used in relation to burning fat. But without VO2 testing, fitness professionals have had to rely on rough estimates to determine which level of exercise intensity would burn the most body fat. For decades, VO2 testing was mainly utilized mainly in clinical and laboratory settings. With VO2 testing now readily available, you can know the precise level of exercise intensity that will maximize the amount of fat you burn.

Here's a recap of WHY to test VO2 :

  • Train smarter, not harder!
  • Get the most out of your workouts!
  • Decrease fatigue and injury!
  • Burn more fat!

How Much Does It Cost?

For years, VO2 testing was available to only elite (and well paid) athletes or individuals taking part in clinical research. Professional athletes have long known that VO2 testing is the way to measure cardio fitness and maximize their workouts. Now, CardioCoach™ can give you VO2 results in a simple, affordable 10 minute test! The cost of VO2 testing at some facilities can range from anywhere from $100-$300 per test. At our facility, the cost of the VO2 Test is $100 for an initial test and $75 for any re-test, should anyone wish to measure changes in their VO2 as a result of their training.
